Young students are at a very impressionable phase of their lives and careers. Almost anything can impress them, inspire them. So, we get to see a mixed bag. Some influences, studies of master artist’s works; experimentation with material and technique... all play a role in the outcome. They often borrow ideas, but their execution is indeed unique.

The young artists traverse through a gamut of personal experiences, general observations and the diabolic imprint of the social scenario. The bouquets and the brickbats carve the psyche of the individual artist as he/she banks on the creative expression of his brush to delve deeper into his impressionist as well as expressionist self and at times, into surrealist forays.

At this stage of their student life, subjects are randomly selected; some are social influences, some deeply thought out issues and topics that the student expresses in his own abstract and at times, exaggerated format. However, such random musings give rise to a fresh perspective – sometimes very ably dealt with in terms of composition and presentation.

The concentration is generally on technique though; each wanting to excel at his chosen path. The current show features diverse subjects viz., village belles, faces… we see a lot of paintings based on social interaction. Interestingly, some have captured a selfie using the art of print making or painted a common enough street-scenario of a young couple in an autorickshaw. Such instances show the impact of the social fabric on the mind of the artist. Pen and ink in bold strokes oil and acrylic on paper and board, oil and pen and ink on canvas and the like define the range of mediums attempted.
