31st Mar
– 12th Apr,’14: Pradarshak presents “Glass
on Fire” Debut Solo Exhibition by Daphene Dias
Daphene Dias is a young artist, whose idealism is
shown through her medium of creative expression.
A brilliant student through her formative years,
Daphene decided to choose enamelling as her skill set, to
enable herself to excel at a path less travelled. With enamelling
generally relegated to the jewellery and handicraft
industries, the young upcoming artist was eager to experiment and prove her
mettle.

Daphene chooses steel enamelling over
copper. Her choice of subject is one
that she is consciously and subconsciously totally synchronized with –
citiscapes. The changing face of the city skyline, observed from very personal
quarters and as a participant, initiate a dialogue between the artist and the
viewer, veering towards an individualistic viewpoint. Somewhere along the
lines, the artist’s and the viewer’s line of thinking merges, to evolve into a narrative
that is nuanced and personal.

Adept at various
techniques in enamelling
– impasto, Limoges, stenciling, etc., Daphene uses the Sgraffito technique
in this series, where she attempts to reveal the fused enamel steel base,
giving it as much importance as the glazed layer above.
The artist shows a lot of promise in her debut
exhibition.
