2nd - 12th Jan. 2018: Pradarshak presents ‘Heads’ Sculptures in wood & metal by Sucharita Adhikary

A young impressionable artist from Kolkata, Sucharita shows a remarkable prowess in working with wood. In this, her third solo outing, she continues to work on her subject of ‘heads’, which gain inspiration from her early days in Kolkata, where, as a fellow commuter, she closely observed the fisherwomen, tribal folk and other labourers returning home after a tired day at work.

Those facial expressions that were laid bare, without the decorum of social obligations, tired eyes that looked into nothingness… just waiting to get back to home and hearth… have left an indelible impact on Sucharita’s psyche. She often muses about the lives of the labour class and their exhausted visages; chiselling the imagery into wood and metal.

The artist uses Shirish, Shaak and Mahogany woods to express herself. For metal, her preferred choice has always been gunmetal, as the alloy is malleable and conducive to her ministrations.

Sucharita’s sculptures are acerbic, even amusing at times. They draw you closer, engage and leave you pondering… trancelike… before you tend to move on. Trying to understand her perspective will be an added plus to the viewers of this exhibition.
