Following its tradition
of introducing upcoming artists into the professional scenario, Pradarshak
presents the debut solo exhibition of artist Satendra Mhatre.

An abstract
expressionist, the young artist works in layers as he paints and repaints his
canvases, alternating between a fine application with transparency and a play
of the white canvas peeping through; while at places thick layers of paint
grace the canvas in impasto technique.

A vivid palette adds on
to the perspectives created on canvases that are predominantly governed by
adept and rapid brushwork. The use of a palette knife is also observed, where
paint is either scraped off for effect or cut through to lend dimension to the
canvas.

The resultant paintings
depict a strategically controlled play of light, adding an expressiveness that
enables the viewer to gauge the strength and speed applied by the artist. At
places, the abstracts tend to communicate a three-dimensional sculptural
rendering akin to an impasto, conveying a highly individualistic narrative.
The work surprised me and I was captivated throughout. Imagery and colours were great. A student of mine wants to delve into abstract. This work is what I shall example.

ReplyDeleteBy now we got accustomed with the word 'expressionism'. The immediate imagery that appears in our mind is the famous painting 'The Scream' by Edward Munch (1893) which inspired 20th century Expressionists, and of course all of us even now. The work can be labeled as realistic expressionism. But Satendra Mhatre’s works (shown above) depict abstract expressionism. In fact, expressing emotional experience rather than physical reality is an Expressionist's forte whatever form an artwork can take. Mhatre's works have not belied the very truth of that self expression. The artist's bold thrusts of brush with vibrant colours on canvas bring a joy that one can hardly miss! We are sure if Mhatre can sustain the act of transforming his mind's multifarious expressions on canvas like this, he can be distinguished as one who can maintain the heritage of lineal continuities of a large number of the renowned expressionist artists in the past.
